New Photo Gallery Posted - Last Year’s Reunion

In order to practice some of the tools I'll be using to upload photo galleries to the site, I've posted a gallery of the photos I have from last year's reunion.

Notice the new "Photo Galleries" section in the sidebar on the left. Click the link there to check out the photos from last year's reunion. I'm working on a way to make the look and feel of the pages be similar to the rest of the site, instead of just the black background, but for now, I just wanted to get the images up and viewable.

Let me know what you think, and if you have any problems or issues navigating and viewing the photos. Post in the comments section below!

It’s Almost Time!

The reunion is tomorrow! We're very excited to see everyone, and can't wait for all the festivities and family fun.

At some point during the weekend, I'll be doing a little demo/training session on how to post to this site. I know it's not easy to follow the directions I write sometimes. ;-) Hopefully, once you see how it's done, it will make more sense, and be a little easier.

I'll be taking and posting digital photos of the activites all weekend, so bring your digital cameras!

Reunion Update from Ann

Got this from Ann in email, and she asked me to post it here:

I am so excited about this coming weekend! I think everything is coming together. I just wanted to put in some reminders of assignments. The itenerary will be posted at mom's home during the reunion so we all have a reference. We have decided to paint plates as our souvenir. That will happen either Friday evening or most likely Saturday afternoon.

  • Joe - BBQ Saturday (you said that you'll buy marinade)
  • Mom - Salads (potato and Acine)
  • Dad - FHE plan of salvation
  • Rebecca - Meal set up Sat & Sun, Run bingo game Saturday
  • Sara - set up and clean up at Shotgun
  • Rachel - Production Manager (tickets, program, etc.) Meal help, crosswords
  • Josh - digital photo memory page (I'm sure we'll be needing techno help too)
  • Ann & Clan - Hold babies, play, eat lots of food, take naps, watch everyone else
The same schedule is in place that I sent the family last month. If you do not have it still please let me know and I'll send it to you.

Joe, have you decided on your plans yet? Mom said something about going home Saturday evening because of church obligations on Sunday. If that is the case we can have our family meeting Saturday night. Let me know.

All sisters (and sister-in-laws), do you need any Mary Kay? I have all of the staple items (cleanser, moisturizer, foundation, mascara, eyeliner, some eye color, sponges, etc.) so if you are needing some in the near future I can bring it up this weekend.

See you all in a few days!

Ann & clan

Giles’ Blessing

It was nice to get together with everyone for Giles' blessing yesteryday. Joe did a great job, and was very gracious in opening up his house to be mobbed with people for the "afterparty". I estimate there were between 150 and 200 people in Joe's house, 70% of them being children. But I could be a little off on the numbers.

Congrats to Joe and Tina and Syndey on little Giles! Now we just need to get some photos of him posted here!

Free Antivirus with 12 months of updates from Microsoft

Computer Associates EC Armor Security Suite

As part of their Protect Your PC initiative, Microsoft seems to have partnered with Computer Associates to give away a 12-month subscription to their EZ Armor Firewall and Antivirus Suite.

If you don't already have up-to-date antivirus software like McAfee or Symantec/Norton running on your system, go get it.

Also, if you haven't already set up Automatic Updates in Windows to get the latest patches as they become available, and/or you're on a broadband connection and don't have a firewall configured, go to Microsoft's Protect Your PC site to automatically set up Automatic Updates and the Windows Personal Firewall.

The most important reason to configure Automatic Updates is that it will be the primary delivery method for the recently released Windows XP Service Pack 2, which, in addition to the latest patches and fixes, includes enhanced security features like a completely revamped Personal Firewall that's enabled by default, a popup blocker, and other security features. The best way to make sure you get SP2 is to have Automatic Updates enabled (it's already available in its final form to beta testers and MSDN Universal subscribers).

I spend most of my time in my day job dealing with security (patching, antivirus, etc.), so I know that if everyone took these steps to protect themselves, the virus writers would have a lot harder time wreaking havoc as much as they do. So be dilligent, and protect yourself!

Miss Teen USA commentary

After we finished watching the mega-hit movie Starsky & Hutch, we tuned into the Miss Teen USA pageant, thanks to Rebecca's enthusiastic reminder! Some things just can't be missed! When it came down to the final five, I thought for sure Miss Teen Hawaii would win, even though she said she would ban all fast-food restaurants if she became President. I was humored by Rebecca's reasoning for her favorite -Miss Tennessee- because she liked her long curly hair like I used to have. Oh, Rebecca sometimes we just can't let go of our dreams... Hawaii didn't win, but I wasn't too disappointed by Louisiana taking the crown. She just looked so young! No, I didn't get faklempted upon her "first walk" as the victor, but I have to admit that I wished she would have said, "...and I really do want world peace!"

How's that for a quality date night with my husband!

Bloggin?

Why not? Looks like I have finally succumbed to peer pressure and chose to "follow the crowd" by submitting my very first blog. We are doing just fine! Baby Giles is doing what new born babies do best; eat, sleep, and fill their diapers. Thanks to Sydney we have all the help we need and some. Is it possible to have motherly instincts at age 2? Don't forget that Sunday we are blessing this baby. Church starts at 1:00pm and I would encourage you to arrive early since the seats fill up quickly and general announcements are not done until Sunday School so we go right into blessings etc. soon after the opening prayer. We are planning on having a light dinner following church for those who wish to stay.

Today we had pictures taken of the kids at JC Penney's. This was a big deal since the last time we had pictures taken was when Sydney just had turned one. It was such a horrible experience that we hadn't returned until today. Sydney did great although she tries to put on this "I am shy" routine. Whatever! Junior Seau slept through the whole thing despite my attempts to awake him with cold water, letting him free fall a short distance etc. We ordered a bunch of pictures so expect something sooner than later.

I guess this wasn't too bad. Does this make me a nerd? Be quiet Rebecca, I am not already a nerd!

What the heck is a "blog"?

If you haven't already, you're going to hear me refer to this site (and my other sites) as a "blog". You may be asking yourself, "what the heck is a blog?" You'd have a good question.

"Blog" is short for "web log". It's a type of site that is frequently updated, like an online journal, newspaper, etc. There are several different blog publishing tools to make it easier to have a blog - we use Blogger.com. This site is a blog. The act of posting to a blog is known as blogging. Someone who posts to a blog is known as a blogger.

Here is an excerpt from Blogger.com's Help topic - What is a blog?:

A blog is a web page made up of usually short, frequently updated posts that are arranged chronologically — like a what's new page or a journal. The content and purposes of blogs varies greatly — from links and commentary about other web sites, to news about a company/person/idea, to diaries, photos, poetry, mini-essays, project updates, even fiction.

Blog posts are like instant messages to the web.

Many blogs are personal, "what's on my mind" type musings. Others are collaborative efforts based on a specific topic or area of mutual interest. Some blogs are for play. Some are for work. Some are both.

Blogs are also excellent team/department/company/family communication tools. They help small groups communicate in a way that is simpler and easier to follow than email or discussion forums. Use a private blog on an intranet to allow team members to post related links, files, quotes, or commentary. Set up a family blog where relatives can share personal news. A blog can help keep everyone in the loop, promote cohesiveness and group culture, and provide an informal "voice" of a project or department to outsiders.

I know it sounds kind of funny and geeky, but blogging is one of the biggest things on the Internet. Bloggers are covering the Democratic and Republican National Conventions. Microsoft recently started encouraging its employees to blog. So even though you might feel a little self-conscious at first referring to your family blog, or calling yourself a blogger, hopefully you'll get over it, because you're part of the Next Big Thing on the Internet.
